Discipline Based Art Education at Hugoton Intermediate School: Art History, Art Appreciation, Studio Art Creation
The art curriculum at Hugoton USD 210 focuses on all aspectsof art. In our courses starting in fourth grade up to sixth grade, and following to the middle school, we study all aspects of art education, better known as Discipline Based Art Education, or DBAE. Discipline refers to the three core areas of art education set by the National Art Education Association, as well as adhered to by the Kansas Art Education Association. The three areas of this are listed as follows.
1. Study of Art Appreciation
This is the study of the viewing of art, discussion and distinguishment between quality art and the characteristics of art. The uses of color, shape, line, composition, expression, are discussed and the differences between quality works are focused upon. This is the distinguishment of all characteristics of different genres of art including abstract art, realism, surrealism, sculpture, and much much more.
2. Study of Art History
This is the use of the history of art within the context of a lesson, and is a huge part of discipline based art education. Students learn to understand the past of art that has led up to the current time today, and how art has grown and changed into what it has become now. The art of the past plays a part in the art of the present, and is used in all aspects of art education Specific artists, movements, and styles are brought to life in each lesson to further the understanding of what art created can bring to what we do today.
3. Studio Art Creation
This is the largest component of discipline based art education. This is the creation of projects, using various techniques and art media as studied in art appreciation and art history. Students will know how to apply composition, technique, and understandings of the various art elements of color, line, shape, composition, texture and many more art elements in the creation of student works. Students will be working in the media of drawing, paper, painting, ceramics, sculpture and many other media.
